International Psychoanalytic University Berlin

IPU is a new, private university situated in Berlin. IPU was founded in 2009 to offer courses with an emphasis on psychoanalysis, thus bridging the gap in the academic landscape in the field of psychological studies where previously the emphasis has been solely on behavioural sciences. IPU distinguishes itself from state-run universities in that it offers courses of study that are user-orientated, opening the way for career-changes in social careers. Courses are suitable for both working and non-resident students, and offered on either a full or part-time basis.

Being internationally focussed, IPU plans to offer exchange programmes with universities in England and the USA.

IPU will initially offer three courses:

* Master of Arts (MA) Clinical Psychology/Psychoanalysis (in German)
* Master of Arts (MA) Juvenile Delinquency (in German)
* Master of Arts (MA) Child Protection (in German)

For more than 100 years, psychoanalysis has proved to be a very effective method in the treatment of psychic and psychosomatic diseases. In its differing methodical variants it has definitely helped many patients long-term. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy and depth psychology funded psychotherapy are — apart from behavioural therapy — the only forms of psychotherapy in Germany recognized by health insurers.

For more than 100 years, psychoanalysis has influenced psychology and the social and cultural sciences of the western world. It is a ‘life science’ because it understands man as an individual personality and as a social and cultural being. It is the aim of IPU to introduce psychoanalysis within the academic arena.
